Convening stakeholders across the complex plastics ecosystem

The power of collective action in driving systems change

No single organisation can deliver the shift to a circular economy for plastics. That is why, alongside developing practical solutions, the Alliance works to enable the ecosystem: convening diverse stakeholders across sectors and regions to share perspectives, build partnerships, and learn from one another. Through this work, we also continue to ensure that our point of view, grounded in experience as an implementing organisation, is represented, understood, and appreciated by all stakeholders across the plastics value chain.

Advocating for an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution

We continue to engage in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) process for an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, as an accredited observer. On the sidelines of the resumed fifth session (INC-5.2) in Geneva in August 2025, the Alliance hosted two roundtables attended by governments, industry, intergovernmental organisations, DFIs, civil society, and technical bodies. They explored implementation pathways, financing models, and how a future treaty might balance ambition with adaptability to national circumstances. The Alliance believes progress should continue and not hinge on the conclusion of negotiations.

Supporting other stakeholders

The Alliance also supported convening efforts by other stakeholders in the space. At the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi in December 2025, we contributed a statement to a high-level event on plastic value chain alignment convened by the Government of Norway. We also served as one of the moderators at the World Economic Forum's Solutions Day in Geneva in 2025, providing insights on financing for plastics circularity.

Securing agreements for change

In 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Solid Waste Association established a framework for collaboration on the INC process, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the development of joint resources and case studies. The Alliance also signed a Protocol of Intention with the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil to collaborate on strengthening plastic waste management systems, supporting cooperative integration, generating income for waste pickers, and mobilising blended finance.

Alongside these agreements, through technical exchanges on plastics circularity, the Alliance continued to deepen its engagement with governments in countries such as India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.
